Changing the color of the LED's on the ring of light

Pre-Modified boards you just connect no soldering necessary, and a variety of 0603 LED's to do this mod yourself are available in the Llamma Shop!

Updated 02/04/12 the information below has been updated.  Its been a while since I had to make a ring of light board and forgot how to do it.  I promptly referred to the tutorial here and found out it was wrong!  How embarrassing, this has been out here for quite some time and no one complained!  The problem was with my understanding of how the LED's polarity is noted on the back of the 0603 led.  On the back of all polarized components there is some sort of "pointer" indicates to flow of electrons from positive to negative.  Sometimes its a green silkscreened triangle or "T" sometimes part of the solder pad is made to look like a "T".  I made up a little diagram to help identify the 3 most common surface mount indicators.

Well we done it, but its a bit more art than science.  We were all ready with identical replacement LED's that fit on the board perfectly and were a match for the originals.  But wouldn't you know it, 3 pin LED's are either common cathode or common anode (shared +'s or shared -'s) the ones we got were the opposite of what the Xbox 360 has. Necessity being the mother of invention we went with the little 0603's conveniently the common anode is right next to the cathode spot for green, so we put the negative side to the middle "green" pad, stand them on their side so the light goes toward the center of the PCB, positive side to the common pad and rock and roll.

Begin with your typical wireless board from a 360 and some 0603 LED's  (Available from Llamma)
Note the 5 LED's, these need to be bathed in solder and floated away.  See the 360 controller tutorial for technique
Here is the power pin out for each of the LED's, you could wire in a second color if you ran a jumper.
Holding them with a tweezers I kind of try to stand them on their edge and pull the solder up the side of the LED.
