Llamma's Samsung Install instructions

This package arrives (order here)

  • Pre modified Samsung
  • "Y" power Splitter
  • Custom yellow cable

Prep Xbox case to receive new drive, you will need to clip 4 bits of plastic, it is easiest to do this after you have scored the larger ones with a razor blade at the points you would like them to break.

On on the lid of the case, be sure to score this one with a knife before snapping it off, the plastic on the top of the case can turn white/gray if too much force is used.

Scoring the one on the carrier (top green circle) helps the process, the remaining two in the case can just be munched and torn with a pliers.

Plastic gone

Now to remove the front bezel and faceplate from the DVD drive (these are included so you can use the drive in a PC at a later date should you choose)

Use the emergency eject paperclip hole to gain access to the tray

Notice the two circled clips, those need to pass by the tray to allow it to be removed.  The front tray faceplate moves in an upward direction for removal. (in this photo upward would be away from the camera)

Now with the faceplate removed it is a simple task to remove the bezel, use a screwdriver to push in the tabs circled below and move the bezel forward.

now install an original Xbox DVD tray logo in place of the one that was removed.  Notice inside the green circles the clip has been trimmed at an angle to allow easier installation.  The tray on the pre-modded Samsung has already been trimmed to allow easier installation but you may want to trim a bit more away if necessary.

When done it should snap into place like this, notice the two circled black tabs that go over the tray itself and lock it into place.

Connect the wires, notice the yellow custom cable has one end tied in a knot that is not used or connected to anything.  The black end plugs into the audio out port on the back of the DVD (this port has been disabled and now only functions as the connection to the motherboard, if installed in a PC you would not have audio out).  Notice the connection to the motherboard, the two empty spots on the connector face toward the front of the Xbox and it should snap into place easily, it is possible to plug this in backwards if you push hard enough...

Now we see all the cables connected to the drive

Connect the power splitter to the hard drive power, connect the second end of the splitter to the DVD and the third to the hard drive.  Connect the IDE cable to the motherboard and both drives (I highly recommend installing an ATA100 cable, hardware wise it should make no difference what cable is attached, the motherboard is not capable of ATA100 so it should make no difference.  With the cable installed stopwatch timing tests performance improves 25-30%)

One screw will no longer fit into the case...  no big deal there are 5 others
